Clinique Black Honey sampler

It's funny how some products come to be part of our lives. A few years ago, a random beauty story in a random fashion magazine informed me about an unlikely-looking lipstick produced by Clinique that looked pitch black and was reputed to suit every skin tone. The story was reporting a decision by the company to retire the shade, known as Black Honey, and the ensuing outrage among its fans.

"I must have this," I said, before spending countless hours chasing this soon-to-be unicorn. The lipstick is a light, sheer colour that is part pink, mauve, brown, taupe - it's a colour and a neutral all at once. It has a great layering ability, allowing you to wear it as light or dark as you want.

Last week, I came across a pack dedicated to Black Honey in Sephora, including the lipstick, a gloss, polish and their very excellent black mascara. Somewhere along the way, common sense prevailed and Clinique decided to keep the shade in its range and we can all be thankful for that. (Perhaps they were never going to discontinue it and were rather drumming up hysteria and interest in gullible people like me...)
